Message from Statewide Director Health, John Cordova

I want to take this time to thank you all for your years of dedication and commitment to the Health Workforce Initiative team's efforts to provide quality education and training to students and incumbent staff to meet the needs of our communities.

A bittersweet message. My last day of service will be Friday, April 16, 2021, and I will be retiring from the CC System on May 4, 2021. Not an easy decision to make, but it must be taken.

There is much more significant work to be done. A reimagining of how this work will flow in the future will test current partnerships and alliances. There is work that needs to concentrate on recovery efforts and jobs in the aftermath of the pandemic. That still takes drive and initiative. That takes you. 

I have valued my work, and I value the HWI team. Unfortunately, there is a change to come that may affect that structure. However it unfolds, the need to continue to meet the students' needs of equitable and quality educational outcomes and health care access is essential. Persistence in this effort must remain intact. 

The HWI team made a tremendous impact during the onset of the pandemic. Resilient, we continued to work with all the programs to ensure communication from state agencies, accrediting bodies, develop a system of community of practice for faculty and work with the Office of Emergency Services to inventory PPE and ventilators to meet the needs of the state and communities. It warrants that the HWI team was challenged in their efforts, sustained much-needed communication, and provided the support and resources for moving to an online environment. 

We provided resources for alternate clinical experiences, such as partnering with VITAS Health for students. Work with programs to assist in the COVID testing and now vaccination sites. Collaborate with organizations, education systems, and associations to meet students' needs in our programs. 

It has been my distinct pleasure to work with you all in the capacity of Statewide Director Health. My ultimate goal is community and patient safety by providing a skilled and competent workforce to provide care to my family or even me someday. I hope that momentum continues in the Regional Directors' efforts and you, our allies and partners. 

I entered this role in my shoes and developed various internal and external partnerships and initiatives driven to a regional focus. I KNOW I MADE A DIFFERENCE! The HWI TEAM MADE A DIFFERENCE! That is what I do; that is what we all do! Credit is warranted to all! 

So I close with this, thank you all for your ongoing support and resources, and collegiality. I will miss you all but may see you in another role in the future.  

In the words of one of my favorite authors, Maya Angelou, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

I hope you felt the love and support from me and that you will continue to share that love and support with others.
